WINDSOR, Ontario, March 14, 2016 /CNW/ -- U-Haul adaptive reuse practices have transformed a former General Motors building into a new full-service U-Haul facility for do-it-yourself movers in the South Walkerville community of Windsor.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Walkerville at 1508 Walker Road began serving customers in November. This is the fourth U-Haul store in Windsor and the second to open in the last year after repurposing the abandoned Wickes Bumper Plant for the introduction of U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Walkerville.
The newly acquired 378,000-square-foot property sits on 15.76 acres. Customers currently have access to truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies, towing equipment and hitch installation, and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.
By this fall, there will be 1,000 indoor, climate-controlled storage units available. There will also be 100,000 square feet designated for indoor RV, boat and vehicle parking and storage.
"The store is in the heart of the city and benefits the community through the reuse of an existing property," said David Anstett, U-Haul Company of Western Ontario president. "What's really amazing is how long this building has been a part of the community. My wife's father used to work at the GM plant. I'm so glad we are saving it."
"No other facility in the area has indoor RV storage the way we will. There is a lot of need for all types of storage in the Windsor market, and U-Haul is happy to provide it."
The acquisition of the Windsor facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
