Achema 2024: HYDROGEN'S ROLE IN ENERGY TRANSFORMATION - OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Every three years, 2,800 exhibitors from 50+ nations gather in Frankfurt for ACHEMA, showcasing innovations for the global chemical process industry. After two days, engaging with companies like Evonik, Linde Engineering, Siemens, and German ministries (hashtagBMBF, hashtagBMWK), hashtagHTAI, and hashtagCefic, key takeaways emerged.

**GENERAL IMPRESSIONS**
ACHEMA 2024's theme was clear: progress towards greener, CO2-neutral process engineering is slow despite marketing buzzwords like CO2 Carbon Free, Sustainable, and Circular Economy. While chemical recycling is advancing, many corporations lag in innovation due to CAPEX intensity. However, new players, as seen with Tesla, can revolutionize industries rapidly.

**FOCUS ON HYDROGEN**
The 2024 theme of ACHEMA was Hydrogen, a pivotal element for energy transformation and climate neutrality. I attended several presentations, including "Transport, Storage, and Handling - Key for the Ramp-Up of a German Hydrogen Economy." The discussion highlighted the current focus on existing technologies like electrolysers and liquefied hydrogen processes. However, there was a noticeable lack of innovative solutions being presented. The emphasis remained on using existing infrastructure, such as gas and oil pipelines, for transporting hydrogen, rather than exploring new, cutting-edge technologies.
Another insightful discussion featured Siemens Energy, Air Liquide, and Linde on "Hyperscaling Hydrogen." While it was informative regarding the current stage of installed capacity and industry capabilities to scale up by 2023, the focus again was on existing technologies rather than new innovations.

**HPQ SILICON’S PERSPECTIVE**
From HPQ Silicon Inc. 's viewpoint, the fair was a mix of good and bad news. On the positive side, HPQ’s breakthrough hydrogen production technology, which diverges from the classical electrolysis liquefying process, positions us with a first-mover advantage.
