RE: prelude to a takeover bid ?This activity was Canaccord selling to market,  down to the large cross.  Rest of their sales were all over the houses. 

I would say they sold out entire potfolio, Canaccord or their client?  Tax los this year is not a factor considering that most of the market has no gains.
