Check out Beacon Power. They produce a flywheel system that stores energy and releases it back to the grid to provide better frequency regulation. Active Power builds a similar flywheel but rotates at slower speeds, and is better suited for UPS applications. Both are more expensive that Pb Acid batteries or Pressurized Air, etc. but are definitely more green when it comes to energy storage and have a small foot print. It sure beats getting Coal Power Plants to ramp up and down to meet the varying grid loads in order to maintain the proper frequency.
