early warning systems  however what still puzzles me is why  did they report  that  Air France   plane was missing in the middle of the Atlantic with all that communication technology on board . Don't the on board GPS  keep sending a signal (power or no power) to a  trackiing satellite.   Remember the Indian plane AMA tracked around the 
globe  and  ground crew knew where it was precisely to support a situation such as this . Even Richard Branson  in his wild balloon trips over the oceans always maintained location contact  with the ground  and managed to be rescued in quick order . In my naievity  I assumed AFIRS  did a better job than ACARS  in this regard ie GPS tracking.
