Vale Inco declares 'force majeure' on nickel deliveries: report

Updated 7 hours ago

Vale Inco declared force majeure on nickel deliveries from Sudbury operations at the end of last week, the websiteMetalBulletin.com reports.

The move is a legal procedure designed to excuse the company from its contractual obligations with regard to delivery of nickel due to a strike by more than 3,000 members of the United Steelworkers.

One trader told MetalBulletin.com that the declaration “wasn’t common knowledge,” though Vale Inco did communicate this to its major customers.

Vale Inco Steelworkers in the Sudbury and Port Colborne have been on strike since July 13 after voting to reject the company’s latest contract offer. About 450 workers in Voisey’s Bay also went on strike on Sunday night.
