Excerpt:
China’s African Potash Hunt — Canada-based MagIndustries announced that
China’s Sinohydro had requested more time to evaluate an investment in its
planned African potash mine. State-owned Sinohydro is one of the world’s
largest hydropower companies; MagIndustries hopes to open a 600kt potash
mine in the Congo in 2012. Also this week Allana Resources, which holds
exploratory licenses for potash in Ethiopia, said it was entertaining offers from
potential strategic partners including an unnamed Chinese company. These
projects are highly speculative, in our view, but demonstrate China’s intense
interest in securing long-term potash supplies.
