MABC Celebrates Granting of EA Certificate to Proposed Northwest Power Line

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 23, 2011) - The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) celebrates today's announcement by the Province of British Columbia that BC Hydro has received an environmental assessment certificate for the proposed Northwest Transmission Line Project.

The proposed transmission line has the potential to create thousands of jobs, generate new sources of clean power and provide additional revenues to government to help pay for important programs and services.

"Today's announcement brings a new power line in northern BC one step closer to reality, which is excellent news for northern British Columbia and for BC's mining industry," said Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of the Mining Association of B.C. "We anxiously await the granting of final authorizations to allow for the start of construction, which alone will provide an important boost to local employment and business development."

Studies have shown that the power line has the potential to attract more than $15 billion in investment, create 10,700 jobs and generate $300 million in annual tax revenues to governments.Delivering Green Power to Northern British Columbia (available online at www.highway37.com) also outlines the major environmental benefits of the proposed power line along the Highway 37 Corridor, including significant reductions, displacement and avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions.

"MABC would also like to acknowledge the pivotal role that Premier Gordon Campbell has played in advancing this important project," added Gratton. "Premier Campbell's tenure has been marked by its critical investments in infrastructure that will serve the province well for generations to come. It is appropriate that the approval for the transmission line comes in the final days of his premiership."

The Mining Association of British Columbia is a founding member of the Northwest Power Line Coalition. The Coalition includes the Northern Development Initiative Trust with its forty member communities, the Association for Mineral Exploration of British Columbia, and a number of First Nations, mining companies, independent power producers and local businesses — including engineering firms and equipment suppliers — and concerned citizens.
