Its Galore Creek is located within the territory of the Tahltan in northwestern British Columbia, approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Stewart.

I really don't think it's unreasonable for unions to use legal means to negotiate the best deal possible from a company making very serious returns, especially when the company is seeking a lengthy term of 5 years, going into a commodities (coal) 'supercycle'. Everybody is entitled to their share - I sure wouldn't like to spend my working day underground, in a mine.
The reason the developed world has reasonable health and safety legislation and has worker benefits like health care and pensions is largely because of unions. If they disappear, how long do you think it will take before our mines look and operate like third world nations?
