Google Local milestones.
Google just closed 200M installs of GOOG maps for
mobile (active installs). In March ‘10, 40% of maps traffic was from mobile; now
it’s crossing over on the weekends, with more mobile maps traffic vs. desktop.
Mayer says that by June it should permanently cross over, with mobile
dominating maps traffic consistently. She also highlighted that 20% of searches on
Google overall are for local information. Google is focused on connecting directly
to users. While Chrome and Android started off small, they are now central to
Google’s strategy.
Google Shopper. Google Shopper app (launched in Feb ’10; features include local
availability, barcode scanning, voice search, etc) reached 5M users, up from 2.5M
in November. Today (Thursday) from noon to 2 p.m. in NYC, Google is hosting a
press conference, reportedly concerning an NFC-related payments partnerships
announcement.
