Construction of the road interconnecting the Potassium rich Dallol area in the Afar state with the main road in Agula town of the Tigray state is being speeded up at a cost of 2 billion Birr.
Dallol is situated at 130 meters below sea level. Its temperature is estimated to be between 30 and 50 degree centigrade.
The 155km Dallol-Agula road is being built by the defense construction division. The project has two phases: Agula-Berahle and Berahle-Dallol.
20% earthwork of the Agula-Berahle road project has already been completed, according the project manager, Asmare Wale.
“The project is planned to be completed in 3 years time; it has been over a year now. We had planned to accomplish 12% in a year with 99 million Birr; what we have achieved so far is 13% spending 104 million Birr; that’s more than what we planned for the year,” the project manager told ERTA reporter.
Similarly, 20% earthwork of the Berahle-Dallol road project has been completed so far. The project has created over 1,300 jobs to residents of the surrounding areas. Meria Yusuf is among the beneficiaries.
“I am beneficial from this project; I earn 30 Birr per day,” she said.
Administrator of Berahle district for his part says the project would facilitate the socio-economic progress of the area. Over 300 tourists visit Dallol every month. It is also a place rich in potassium.
Five companies with a combined capital of 6.5 billion US dollars are engaged in potassium extraction in Dallol.
