As for me trying to explain it to you, that is beyond my capability. Click on the link provided. It takes you to the TSX's explanation and to a lengthy Question and answer section by the TSX on the subject. Read and weep or shake your head in disbelief. Their answers and logic baffles the best of brains, it certainly baffles mine. But that is where you go for an eplanation.
Such pricing distortions can only be maintained for a short period. Eventually the fundamentals re-assert themselves. Don't forget P was due for a correction/consolidation after the 100%+ rise in about 2 months in any event. A trigger (any trigger) was needed. The sale by Goldcorp was the excuse this time. Goldcorp did not want these additional shares that they got when P gave them shares on the maturity of their loan in August and, like good businessmen, they monetized at a good profit. They still have their 31% ownership, which is all they wanted to keep when they divested P 2 years ago.
