You are referring to open market purchases which is common. However there are other methods of repurchasing which is not traded on the open market. For example, Aurico recently did a modified dutch auction to repurchase $300M in shares. A price range was offered for shares and shareholders interested in selling would tender their price in that range. This was done outside of the market so it didn't impact any volume traded.
