Lubicon Lake Nation
Penn West, down 18 cents to $9.04, is continuing to battle legal headaches in Northern Alberta. In mid-December, it won a six-month injunction against the Lubicon Lake Nation, which had been blockading a job site for a few weeks claiming traditional ownership of the land. (The Lubicon Lake Nation is related to but separate from the Lubicon Lake band. Each has its own council and chief, but only the latter is recognized by the federal government, and it supports Penn West's activities.) Now the Lubicon Lake Nation is appealing the injunction. It says the order was unconstitutional because it failed to consider Indian rights to traditional territory. "This is our land until the government of Canada enters into an agreement with us," declared the chief on the group's website. The group's adviser on land and negotiations added to Real News Network: "There's no way that they're going to stop... Some of the things that they've discussed is rallies, looking at other industry players in our area -- there's a few of them that have permission from the Alberta government to develop the area." Canadian companies warned by the group include Pinecrest Energy Inc. (PRY: $0.37), Trinidad Drilling Ltd. (TDG: $9.17) and Andora Energy Corp.
