Apple prepping gaming-focused set-top box: report

Apple prepping gaming-focused set-top box: report
The next-generation Apple TV will offer gaming as well as movies and could even offer motion-sensing features like Microsoft's Kinect, according to a new report.

Apple's little ice hockey puck-sized TV box is due for a refresh this year and, according to 9to5Mac, that refresh could see the inclusion of a "games store".

Although primarily a device for mirroring content from another Apple device to a TV and for accessing the Internet and video streaming apps on the big screen, the Apple TV does already support some gaming.

For instance a game can be launched on an Apple TV and players can use their iPhone or iPad as a controller.

However, there is mounting speculation that the new device will be the first to sport some of the motion-sensing technology Apple now controls following its acquisition of PrimeSense.

PrimeSense develops 3D sensing technology -- essentially giving devices the gift of sight -- and was the company behind the original Kinect system for Microsoft's Xbox console.

Apple is expected to launch the new device in the first half of 2014.
