The reactor temperature gauges were also giving false readings during the meltdown. By the time this was realized, it was too late. There was also a valve that had to be opened manually in order for the cooling system to continue to function once the power went out that the control room operators were apparently not aware of.(scary) This was a culmination of mistakes.
