Post says BlackBerry wins Mformation patent case

The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition BlackBerry did not infringe on patents owned by Delaware-based Mformation Technologies, a top U.S. appeals court ruled Friday. The Post's Armina Ligaya writes the ruling ends the case after nearly seven years of litigation and means BlackBerry does not have to pay Mformation $147.2-million (U.S.) as originally directed by a California jury in July, 2012, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said in its decision. In 2008, Mformation sued BlackBerry for patent infringement over a process that remotely manages a wireless device in a wireless network. In Judge Edward M. Chen's ruling Friday, he said "substantial evidence" did not support a judgment of infringement. BlackBerry said it was pleased with the outcome. "[Friday's] verdict follows a series of successful litigation victories, underscoring BlackBerry's continued effort to fight against meritless claims," a BlackBerry spokesman said in an e-mail. "We look forward to a time when technology companies will no longer be forced to spend huge amounts of time and money defending frivolous patent cases such as these, and instead invest their resources to drive innovation."
