No one should reasonably argue that the university system was put in place to produce geniuses, but rather an educated workforce who is also (hopefully) exposed to a smattering of philosophy and the arts. Even lucky individuals with brilliant minds benefit from formal education.
That no human being has ever discovered a cure for cancer is not indicative of the failure of the educational system, but of the magnitude, complexity and mystery of nature.
