A lot of shorts of dividend paying stock will cover and buy it at the lower price hopefully before the exdividend on the fear of it might run up on them from their target price.

If most of the the shorts covered before the exdividend date, wouldn't every stock in existence have a massive run up right before the exdividend??? You are really not thinking straight. Imagine 2.7 million short sellers trying to back shares right before the exdividend vs LRE's daily volume numbers. I guess it is going to go up 3 bucks at a certain every month!!! whoo hooo, I'm gonna be rich!!!!
