Look at what else was in the pipe for NRG - Two firms are under consideration to build a new energy-from-waste-plant in Ponte Riccio, to the east of Naples.
ENDS understands that A2A has proposed grate incineration, as used at its 600,000t/yr Acerra plant which serves the region.
Also in the running is Green Point Global Partners. It has put forward using fellow Canadian company Alter NRG’s Westinghouse plasma gasification technology, which would be new to Italy.
The plant’s feedstock will be a vast open-air store of refuse-derived fuel. The 130-hectare site, known as Taverna de Re, is a legacy of the region’s historically poor waste management practices and efforts to improve them.
Burning the RDF at Acerra was ruled out as impractical many years ago.
The contract discussions have now reached the closing stages. Both companies were called to present additional information to that submitted in their bids at a meeting with the local municipality on Monday. The next sessions will focus on economic and financial issues, and the technology that the two firms would adopt.
Whichever option is selected, the cost of the construction is expected to be around €300m.
