In the late 1980s, the PDAC commissioned a study to determine how much Canada has to spend annually on exploration in order to find enough new reserves to replace existing, depleting reserves. The answer was $4 billion. And, this was just for Canada. The message: the world needs to find new world class mines every year simply to maintain production at current levels, not to mention new world class mines to fuel growth in BRIC economies.
