personally, i think the big guys are forced to sit tight.  Spending any amount of money in the face of what's happening at the moment isn't going to sit well with shareholders.  Unfortunately, as the price of commodities goes, so goes the immediated fortunes of the companies that sell them.  This is a washout of the gold sector to shake off the minor players.  We might be lucky to be left standing due to our efficiency but in some ways i'd rather the cash than the takeover LSG announced last week.  They might need it. 
on an unrelated item, those that were around in 1999-2000 when gold was $350 and oil around $13 might find the market activity interesting.  The technology sector led an obscene advance then only to be hammered when rational thinking returned.  Netflix, Amazon, Twitter, et al. the new Nortel, Lucent, Worldcom ?  It's out of control.
