There has been a lot of debate over just how successful each virtual reality headset manufacturer will be this year. While both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive got off to rocky, yet early starts this year, Playstation VR will enter the market with just two and a half months to spare in 2016. With that said, a new research report from the Chinese-language, Taipei-based Topology Research Institute has indicated that Sony may blow out the competition for sales this year with their Playstation VR headset.

According to the report, Topology Research Institute now expects total 2016 sales of VR headsets to look like this:

- Sony Playstation VR - 6 Million Units Sold in 2016
- Facebook's Oculus Rift - 2.3 Million Units Sold in 2016
- HTC Vive - 700,000 Units sold in 2016

With close to 40 million Playstation 4 consoles sold to date, and being that the PS VR headset will function with the console and cost just $399, Sony has put themselves in an enviable position to possibly dominate the market in the early going, despite launching more than six months after their two main competitors, Oculus and HTC. Could Sony possibly outsell both the Rift and Vive combined by a 2:1 ratio? I think it's possible only because many consumers are hesitant on wanting to purchase a $1000 PC that's capable of running either headset.

With this said the Oculus Rift could see a major boost at the start of 2017 as Microsoft is expected to partner with Facebook to offer Rift compatibility with their forthcoming Xbox Scorpio console. Additionally, HTC seems to be spending big, creating a $100 million fund to help spur the development of content for this platform. While Sony may lead big by the end of this year, 2017 is going to see an explosion of innovation and competition should drive prices down even further.

What do you guys think? Could these 2016 sales estimates be accurate?
