Recent cobalt price gains are tempting Chinese speculators to try to enter the market through physical metal purchases and cobalt-relevant equities, sources told Metal Bulletin.

Many, from public funds, asset managers and private funds to individual investors, expect a bull run in the next few years, thanks to healthy growth in battery demand for the blue metal. Cobalt prices have seen consecutive gains as consumers sought to book new forward business, while hedge funds and private investors continued to look to buy.  On Friday July 22, Metal Bulletin assessed cobalt metal at 190,000-208,000 yuan ($28,421-31,114) per tonne in the Chinese market, compared with 189,000-206,000 yuan per tonne in the previous pricing session.
