Short Interest Changes..., And Capitulation? The table I have put together is copied below, using information published by Canadian exchanges (consolidated accumulated short interest), IIROC and OTC:
(Note that Short Traded Volume means any trade marked 'short' and indicates a short position taken, and covered with borrowed shares within 3 days, as naked short selling is illegal in Canada. When these shorts are buy shares and cover at a lower price following the bear raid or whatever bizarre manipulation the trader using TD was trying to do, they are just a share purchase and reflected in the increased volume of shares traded in the period.)
The Canadian accumulated short interest held Nov 30 will be out Friday, I expect, and the OTC short interest Dec 10, and only the total short interest held as of Nov 30, not the short sales transacted.
Note that the TD trading that was so anomolous obviously involved a huge spike in short interest trades taken out, but the number of shares bought through TD during this period was 3 x this at 12.5 M and the number sold was 13 M with a calculated loss of .016 per share plus a similar loss relate to trading costs presumably. So about a third of the trades were taking short interest and probably a similar number to cover, though they could have done trades anonymously as well. We just won't know what percentage of the shorts were also covered during this period until Friday, though I suspect most of them were, (TD was only .5 M more sold than bought), and we won't see the machinations of the OTC market until Dec 10 to try to correlated this wild card.
Bottom line, as has been mentioned previously, the TD trade is over, as is the post cc bear raid. Whether IIROC or FINRA complaints and investigations had a role in this is unknowable, for now. Maybe, these traders just moved on due to mounting losses.
But, Investor sentiment is extremely beaten up, especially as this all happened for no apparent reason unrelated to fundamentals and the share price was kept down long and hard to make even the strongest hands weak. We all know immediate positive news is the only way out of this quagmire.
