BioSecurity Notice to Industry - Government of Canada and Canadian Animal Health Coalition partner to protect Canada's animal resources during transport
OTTAWA, 2016-01-08 – Biosecurity protects the economy and the environment from the damage caused by animal disease. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has come together with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), provincial governments and industry organizations to develop a biosecurity standard that will protect Canada's livestock and poultry during transport.
The , and partners have established the Livestock, Poultry and Deadstock Transport Biosecurity Advisory Committee to develop a service sector biosecurity standard by Fall 2017. This standard will provide clear, effective biosecurity guidelines to owners, producers and service providers when transporting the following:
- livestock including cattle, bison, veal, goats, sheep, hogs/pigs, equine (slaughter and sport), cervid, camelid and mink;
- poultry including the transportation of chicks; and
- deadstock including poultry.
Once developed, the standard can be adopted in its entirety, used as a species-specific reference and can be incorporated into existing transport training programs.
Biosecurity standards take up to two years to develop through a formalized process with participation from a broad cross-section of stakeholders, including industry organizations, federal and provincial governments, and academic institutions. Stakeholders will be asked to contribute to the standard and will be advised of key decisions and milestones.
Funding to develop this standard has been provided under the federal government's Growing Forward 2 Agricultural Policy Framework. Learn more about national biosecurity standards by visiting the website.
