I sometimes short GDX and GDXJ to hedge my portfolio of miners.
That has been usefull in risk control for me.
However, I follow the markets very closely and can react quickly, if necessary, to cover shorts.
Regading hedging miners, there are several US listed names that have good option liquidity.
These include AG (FR) FSM (FVI) BTG, RGLD and SLW.
Slightly out of the money puts can usually be bought as fairly cheap risk insurance.
