There have, however, been recent examples of a very small number of generic medicines that face limited competition, marketed at very high prices.
Our arrangements with the Department of Health provide that they may intervene to set prices where competition is ineffective in protecting the NHS from high prices.
We have earlier made proposals to the Department of how they could most efficiently achieve this but we understand that they feel that they lack the powers to do so.
The Bill will rectify this and we welcome this change. We welcome the Secretary of State's acknowledgement of this support at Second Reading.
