You have to constantly reevaluate your position to see if gains going forward will be better where you are currently invested (even if your present position is in the red) than in other stocks. But, nobody likes to leave a position at a loss, even if the potential gains elsewhere are more than the potential gains to be had in the rebound. That is emotion overtaking logic. I am just as guilty of it as anybody.
