Just back from rounding....I have about 25 inpatients on a gen med ward and currently 5 have HIV.
1 is a brand new diagnosis and the others are generally off and on their meds. CD4 counts range from 67-700.
Lately, we've been having a bit of an outbreak due to IV drug users re-using filters when they inject their drug of choice. The filters harbour the HIV virus.
So, as one can imagine, this patient population is at high risk for MDR as they have poor compliance with their therapy. One of our 30 year olds was recently made palliative with "untreatable" disease.
So, there are new HIV patie to every day in NA and the possibility of them becoming MDR remains significant.
