Rakita acquires 220 ha land for mine opening in Bor
Canadian company Nevsun bought, through its daughter company Rakita, about 220 hectares of land for opening a copper and gold mine, although it has not been granted permission from the Serbian government for exploitation of ore deposits in the Bor region, Novosti finds out.
According to the Belgrade’s newspaper, the Canadians bought land from citizens, and recently they have received approval from the Government of Serbia for development of a special purpose plan for opening of the mine. However, Nevsun is officially still in the geological exploration stage, although it is known that the project for opening new mining site has been mainly completed.
- We initiated a meeting with leaders of Rakite, but also with RTB Bor experts - Aleksandar Milikic, president of the Bor municipality says.
- We want to have an insight into impact of the mine on the environment, use of municipal land from a Canadian company, as well as purchase of land for the purpose of opening the mines, and to know how to exploit ore from a future mine 7 kilometers from the city. If it will be where we think it will, Bor will literally be surrounded by mines. On one side, RTB Bor, and on the other, the one opened by the Canadians. Our city would thus literally be at the center of two industrial giants.
