My trades are large enough that $5 one way or another isn't noticed. I have dealt with a brokerage that will give me the same $4.95 rate you're talking about. In that case it only applied to a certain dollar figure and below. If above that set figure rates weht up. 

From the way you posted, I was under the impression that you may be dealing with a personal broker and subject to some very outrageous fees for trading. 

What you spoke of was the high cost of trading fees. These can certainly bite into profits when purchasing small lots of shares/units.
