RE:shortsIt all depends who you are, and/or who your broker is.

 For Mr. Joe Q. Average - generally - no, your liability isn't usually deep enough. If the stock goes the other way, there is little chance you'll be able to cover. Stocks $3 and more are no longer considered penny stocks, so there's a better chance that there will be limited volatility. Some brokers will let you do lower SP if you have cash on hold.... but all brokers will gladly loan out your shares you carry with them, regardless of price, unless there is already a sell order on them (there cannot be 2 sell orders on the same share - so the share gets pinned down)
