From 2015, the Samax Maramures company obtained the concession of Rovina mining perimeter, in Hunedoara County. According to the project, reserves that can be extracted from Rovina over the next 20 years are estimated at five billion dollars, with the state collecting more than $ 300 million from the producer. About 200 tons of gold and over 635,000 tons of copper from Rovina, the second largest goldfield in Europe, according to specialists, would be extracted through exclusive private investment without the participation of the Romanian state. The state will receive royalties of 6% for gold and 5% for copper, which in the first twenty years of mining activity is over $ 300 million. The duration of the concession could then be extended for successive periods of five years, is shown in the project's grounding note.
"The estimated mining production value over the 20-year concession period is $ 3,697,911,600 for gold and $ 1,772,194,945 for nonferrous ores and copper. Accordingly, the amount of the royalty due to the State Budget for the period of the concession is $ 221,874,696 for gold and $ 88,609,747.25 for copper. Cumulatively, the amount of the royalty due to the state budget over a 20-year concession period is $ 310,484,443.25 provided that the license is fully implemented without changing the current market conditions. The annual average amount of the royalty due to the state budget is $ 15,524,222.11625 ", the project's grounding for the granting of the operating license is shown.
Rovina is about 20 kilometers away from Deva in the Certej area, and the deposit stretches over an area of 94 square kilometers. The area of the exploitation perimeter is 27.7 km2. The mining project at Rovina was challenged by several non-governmental organizations, including Mining Watch Romania and Carpathian Gold.
