RE:RISK Among the many reasons to sell some shares here are mines:
Some days ago, I sold almost everything but my PYR and HPQ shares in my RRIF (I'am 80) @ 3.94 to pay for the taxes and secure them into my margin account because if I still hold them in an RRIF, the tax cost will be much higher as they appreciate.
Last December, I transferred as many PYR shares into my TFSA from my RRIF to make the previous three years' contributions I had been unable to fulfill because I was living on my mortgage margin account. I would have preferred selling my house my banker strongly suggested I should do rather than selling any PYR shares.
I miscalculated and put $7200 more of PYR cheap share value (cost 0.52$ and about 0.30$ at transfer day) than I was allowed to as a letter from CRA advised me to withdraw that amount on March 7 this year. No penalties. I'm a good boy! But my PYR shares had appreciated in the meantime, sold some at 1.87$ to conform to the law as I still want to stay a good boy.
Today I decided to sell all other stocks I still hold in my RRIF and enough PYR shares to pay for taxes as I will close my RRIF. The 23K PYR and 10K HPQ shares left in my RRIF will switch at the lower of today's trading price. The tax burden will be less on capital gains into my regular margin account. So why sell now? Why not? If it makes sense!
