Cheryl Gallant did the correct thing today and pointed out to the unnecessary delays in the approval process of the much required rapid antigen tests. This is a fact and it effects all of us. On the other hand, her information on SONA was not entirely correct. So, for those on this board who are willing to reach out to their political representatives or personal contacts and be factual, below I am sharing my narrative that I use to reach out to my contacts. Dear XX I would like to bring to your attention that one of the five companies currently being reviewed by Health Canada for rapid antigen tests is “Sona Nanotech”, a Canadian company located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and funded by NGen. It is a fact that highly accurate PCR tests will always have a lead role as a diagnostic tool. On the other hand, antigen tests should also be extensively used as a screening tool including asymptomatic people to slow down the spread of virus and simultaneously initiate the recovery our economy. We need to act now without any further delay and start using rapid antigen tests as an effective screening tool as recommended by many reputable health professionals and scientists. Among those health professionals, Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding’s analogy provides a great awareness on the importance of rapid antigen tests: “if we want to find a hidden enemy submarine, is it better to drop one sonar buoy (PCR test) every 100 miles that reports weekly, or drop a 90%-good sonar buoy every mile that reports every 15 min? Latter of course. That’s antigen testing!” The Canadian SONA’s rapid antigen COVID-19 test utilizes their proprietary gold nanorod technology and provides a result in 15 minutes without the use of either laboratory equipment or a reader, similar to pregnancy tests. It provides a low-cost, easy to use screening test that can be performed at the point of care. The test is ideal to screen individuals prior to entering closed public venues such as flights, sporting events, businesses, and schools. They received impressive results and verification from a third-party laboratory in the US, MRI Global, confirming the test sensitivity of 96%, test specificity of 96% and a Limit of Detection (“LOD”) of 2.1 x 102 TCID50. In parallel, they also completed a clinical evaluation study, again with impressive results that no other rapid antigen test could achieve so far. The test attained a sensitivity of 84.6% and a specificity of 90.0% in a study across 99 collected clinical patient samples, which included 39 positive samples and 60 negative samples, as determined by RT-PCR testing. That includes asymptomatic patients as well. In the light of above, it is evident that the SONA Nanotech’s disruptive nanotechnology will bring a paradigm shift in our fight against COVID-19 and greatly support the recovery of our economy. Note that I am neither a spokesperson nor an employee of the company.
