Through the Greenlane Digest, our goal is to provide weekly updates and the latest articles on the RNG industry. Make sure you forward our newsletter to your contacts!

The European Biogas Association (EBA) provided an update on the state of biomethane development in Spain, as 2020 is an important year for the industry in the country.  Spain is laying the foundations for growth of biogas and biomethane by implementing a national energy and climate plan that lays out the importance of renewable gases and developing incentive measures for biogas and biomethane.

The North American RNG industry has grown rapidly over the last decade with vast potential remaining, says a recent article in Biomass magazine.  California has evolved into the heart of the RNG boom, where the Low Carbon Fuel Standard has proven to be a powerful accelerator of RNG production and use.  Public policies are driving growth, and as the public becomes better educated about the environmental and economic benefits of RNG, the demand for public officials to support pro-RNG policies increases.

NGVAmerica released a study at its Annual Industry Summit presenting a compelling case for why communities should continue to invest in new near-zero carbon emission natural gas technology. Using New Jersey as a case study, NGVAmerica analyzed the costs and impact of transitioning that state’s entire 10,000 refuse truck fleet from diesel to both natural gas (using RNG) and battery electric.  The study concluded that not only do natural gas vehicles fueled by RNG outperform battery electric alternatives in terms of impactful NOx and GHG reductions, but they are also more cost effective and make far better investments of public tax dollars.

Another recent publication in a trade journal reviewed the state of RNG markets in California, highlighting the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) and the various carbon intensities (CI) of transportation fuels.  The two fuels with the lowest CIs as evaluated by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are dairy biogas and biogas diverted from food and green waste.  The article also discusses the current state of RNG production within California and outlines a potential growth scenario of new RNG production facilities through 2024.
