The US government supportive of cancer programsThe new administration and president Biden who lost his son to brain cancer are proactively supporting cancer research programs,it was written elsewhere that the president is also is in no rush to replace temporary FDA commissioner Janet woodcock who seems to be more open to find innovative treatments for unmet/serious conditions.
As usual there is that partisan diversity in senate/house each party trying to undermine the other but to have the US government backing the cancer researchers is a good sign which should have a ripple effect on other organizations including the FDA.
“These are things that I know that the president-elect cares deeply about,” says Ron DePinho, MD, of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, whose own Moon Shots Program, launched in 2012, helped inspire Biden's effort 4 years later. He is science-driven. He is results-oriented….I can't imagine him not putting a lot more fuel in the rocket for cancer. Numerous federal agencies played a role. The Department of Health and Human Services, for example, overhauled its public clinical trial repository and issued new rules about reporting results. The FDA created its Oncology Center of Excellence to accelerate regulatory review of cancer drugs and devices.
One can only imagine that, given Biden's passion and his understanding of the cancer problem, this will continue to be a priority for him, says Karen Knudsen, PhD, president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes and enterprise director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. Hopefully we see something like the Moonshot come out…with some clear objectives of what can be accomplished in the short- and long-term.
Many of Biden's closest confidantes are also dedicated to the cancer cause. His wife, Jill, is a longtime advocate for breast cancer research and early detection; as First Lady, she is expected to continue that work. Vice President Kamala Harris is the daughter of an accomplished cancer researcher, Shyamala Gopalan, who died of colon cancer in 2009.”
What Biden's Presidency Will Mean for Cancer | Cancer Discovery
“In his first major address to Congress in April, US President Joe Biden announced an ambitious plan: to “end cancer as we know it. The President has proposed a new government agency, the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), which would use federal funding to accelerate the research and development of highly innovative treatments for areas of unmet need.
The White House has made a budget request of $6.5bn to launch the agency, the initial focus of which would be cancer – the second leading cause of death in the US – as well as other serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes. The major investment would, the budget request document says, drive transformational innovation in health research and speed application and implementation of health breakthroughs.”
