Yesterday's Town Hall
Yesterday's Town HallFrom my recollection Joe Bidden never said "defund the police" he did however say we need to reallocate funds. Not the same thing even though monies mean that what is given to one project may not be given the same amounts so as to fund another which may require it. "Defund" means taking away monies due to negative outcomes as far as I am concerned.
The problem is that people are looking for government to bail them out. Yesterday a restaurant owner asked Bidden what is he going to do to help them keep up to staffing and reopening etc. All Bidden should have said is that the Administration gave people monies to help keep businesses up and running to be able to get what they need and have a little extra to go eat out. People want to hear that there is a cushion for them but the fact is what Bidden said that people are working in jobs that have paid them less than livable wages and that if there are other opportunities for higher living those are competing to attract their labor--he clearly and rightly said people need to pay at least $15 hour with people working on restaurant at $8 or so an hour with tips is not going to keep them there when others who are hiring are paying $15/hour. Republicans generally don't interfere with these things nor should the Democrats it is up to people to pay fair wages. I am sure there had to be loans and things businesses drew from as well some parts probably excused if not all.
In any case, Joe said on his street people grew up being Firefighters Police or Clergy tongue and cheek and clearly stated he is for the police and giving them them fhe funding that is needed to help them do their job looking at things like burnout etc by having monies poured in to have psychological support. He also stated a huge need for community policing and outreach which I fully agree with him to foster good will and trust between the community and the police officers very important and the need to have others trained specifically for crisis intervention to possibly be utilized vs the cop--he gave the example if someone is sitting on the ledge ready to jump instead of a cop needing to have all hats that there will be things like trained psychologists. So if monies is allocated for things like this to increase those who are equally needed but draws from a pool of funds that is reallocation of limited amounts of funds again not the same thing as intentionally defunding due to abuse or whatever.
In any case, by what I heard more monies will go into social work/psychologists etc and monies towards the police in terms of protecting both their psychological and physical well being. The issue remains that the pools of monies is from everything else in terms of looking at infrastructure social programs etc. so there is a tight working budget and the government can not just let the flood gates open.
Overall, Bidden was clearly saying he will be helping the police not what people have spun things out to be. Bidden said off the cuff that was not true about "Defunding" that it was the Republicans saying it and then others started to say the same thing. I never heard him say it if he did my mistake but what I took from the whole thing is reallocation!
Let's see where things go I see huge gains here.
