Such contract is trending in all provinces and countriesThis is one of many.
All MRCs (regroupment of municipalities) in Quebec, and also in other provinces, are moving into this market.
Energir (ex Gaz Metro) is the sole natural gaz pipeline in Quebec. This is a regulated environment.
Energir currently has a campaign that pushed for this type of project.
Renewable natural gas | Our energies | nergir (energir.com) There's power in your leftovers
Organic waste makes an incredible raw material for producing renewable natural gas (RNG). By recovering waste, we can create a clean energy.
Renewable natural gas
A clean produced energy
1- Waste – First, food waste (like what you would put in your brown bin) is collected and taken to a biomethanation plant.
2- Biomethanation – Next, the waste is placed in biodigesters, which are enormous oxygen-free vats that digest organic matter like a giant stomach. Microorganisms then break down the waste into RNG.
3- Renewable energy – The resulting renewable natural gas is injected into the gas network. The clean energy is then ready for use to heat building, heat water, cook, etc. Advantages
Lower GHG emissions
Repurposed waste
Energy produced at home
Organic waste that pays off
Laval University becomes the first Qubec university to buy renewable natural gas
The agreement between Laval University and nergir for the supply of renewable natural gas (GNR) supports the University's sustainable development mission and adds to its approach to reduce energy consumption and combat climate change and carbon neutrality.
Coop Agri-nergie Warwick
Coop Agri-nergie Warwick is the first agricultural cooperative dedicated to the production of renewable energy in Qubec. It brings together roughly ten agricultural producers from the Arthabaska RCM who will produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from slurry and manure from dairy cattle mixed with residual organic matter from surrounding businesses. The biomethanation complex will be developed, built and operated by Coop Carbone, a non-profit solidarity cooperative working on the development of cooperative agricultural biomethanization projects. The start of operations is already planned for spring 2021.
Qubec
In 2023, Qubec City will inject renewable natural gas into nergir’s network. The biomethanation center of the agglomeration of Qubec (CBAQ) is currently under construction. It will treat:
- food residues (86,600 tons/year)
- biosolids (materials from the wastewater treatment plant) (96,000 tons/year)

The biogas purification unit at the Neuville site is expected to produce an average of 1.8 million cubic meters of biomethane (or RNG) per year, which will be injected into Energir's gas network. Previously, the biogas produced from the decomposition of organic waste at the landfill was collected and destroyed by flaring. As a result, this project is expected to reduce 3,500 tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) per year which is the equivalent of removing 1,000 cars from the road every single year.
