Mining leaves toxic dump: 585 tailings dams in Mexico
The mining industry leaves a toxic dump across the country. The first inventory prepared by Semarnat reveals the contaminating trace of 585 tailings dams, owned by companies such as Frisco, Grupo Peoles, Grupo Mxico, First Majestic, Southern Copper Corp and Excellon Resources. Specialists urge modifications to the Mining Law, promulgated by Carlos Salinas de Gortari
The official Mexican standard NOM-141-Semarnat-2003 establishes that “tailings dams are one of the systems for the final disposal of solid waste generated by the benefit of minerals contemplated in the Regulation of the General Law of Ecological Balance and the Protection of the Environment Regarding Hazardous Waste, and they must meet maximum security conditions, in order to guarantee the protection of the population, economic and social activities and, in general, ecological balance ”.
