There needs to be a compromise..............Something I hope that the western leaders (  particularly the US ) can understand or respect. Ukraine, which at one time, belonged to the former Soviet Union, Russia, shares a massive border with Russia just like Canada or Mexico shares with the US. Suppose one day there was a revolution in our country and for one reason or the other we were no longer chummy with the US and we began to form ties with Russia or China. How well do think it would be received by the US if we allowed a military presence from one of those countries right on there doorstep.................kind of like Cuba/USSR  in the 60's .
All Putin is looking for is some respect and I can certainly understand why he is asking the west not to allow Ukraine to be a member of NATO.
