I agree with yr point but I think however Putin is using this as an excuse to rebuild what was once the former USSR. As of this morning it looks like Belarus is already a done deal with no shots fired. My real concern is that there is a deal with China to irreversibly change the world Order whereby China could take over Taiwan simultaneously. With oil close to 100$ his strategic timing is perfect. As for the US and EU sanctions , they will be non effective and will also jeopardize their own economies. Conclusion it is not a pretty picture and you are right the only way to DeEscalate the situation at least in the short term is for Ukraine to renounce to its ambitions of joining NATO. Remember they are not an official member but only an invited guess. As such NATO as no obligation to milatary defend them. It's a very sad situation where an human disaster awaits. In closing if Putin gives the order, expect a massive cyberattacks globally the likes of which we've never experienced, ie the financial complex.
