GSI's Crash Hardened DVRs - Similar to Airplane Black BoxesGatekeeper's Crash Hardened Digital Video Recording (DVR) devices serve a similar purpose to the "black box" in airplanes.
The "black box" is actually bright orange and Gatekeeper's DVRs are bright yellow to assist in crash recovery efforts. GSI's DVRs are National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) compliant.
In addition to airplanes, every bus and train should have them installed and updated with new technology.
The bus contract will be part of SEPTA's Four Year Video Systems Refreshment Program starting next month beginning with Gatekeeper's DVR switches and configurations contract for the New Flyer buses. This contract has not been announced to the public at the time of this post.
CEO's comments from GSI's contract for crash hardened DVRs installed on SEPTA's trains announced in October 2019:
Doug Dyment, President and CEO commented, “Gatekeeper is focused on developing video-based solutions that are designed to protect people in transit. This contract award demonstrates our ability to design solutions that comply with NTSB’s recommendations. We believe that all transit trains and buses should be equipped with video and event recording devices to improve safety and aid in accident investigations, in the same way black boxes are used in the airline industry.”
