He's made about three statements in the past two weeks about solutions to the Ukraine crisis that are clearly in line with the Kremlin. Here's a summary of Musk's first tweet plus a critique by A.J. Fabino of Benzinga:
https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/22/10/29123509/elon-musk-says-these-4-things-need-to-happen-to-end-putins-war-in-ukraine We can respect anyone's worries about nuclear war as genuine. The problem is that appeasing Putin by giving him Crimea and holding elections in areas that have been "cleansed" of pro-western citizens is to tell every nuclear power in the world that they can steal + destroy + rape ... then threaten nuclear retaliation if they're forced to give up what they've stolen or to pay reparations.
Musk has clearly fallen in with a group of wealthy, mostly right-wing appeasers. Some of them, like Professor John Mearsheimer, are leaders of the "Realist" school of thought, which believes that Putin's main goal in attacking Ukraine was to resist a threatening encroachment by NATO.
The "realist" school of thought sees the war as a proxy war between Russia and the USA; it utterly ignores the independent, sovereign will of 44 million Ukrainians. In fact, elections in Ukraine have already been held that focused on the whole issue of ties with Russia vs. Europe, and Ukrainians have voted again and again with significant majorities in favour of the EU.
Anyway, a side issue to all of this -- though it's still a huge issue -- is the simple fact that Musk has been dragged into a political battle, which has all kinds of implications for stock valuation.
