Short sellers perform a valuable service in the market in terms of price discovery and uncovering fundamental flaws and fradulent practises. Their work is usually substantially more in depth than that of long side analysts (it has to be because of the risk they take). Short selling can also be an important part of risk reducing hedging strategies.

Sure, crack down on naked short selling and other abusive practises. But banning short selling altogether is asking for trouble.
