Regarding 19.2kbs I can tell you that this speed is just great for text based messaging like email and text based query etc. Have used it for five years on intranet and it works just great for our applications. Have also used 19.2 on Internet and works fine once site is cached however agree with you its slow. But for Intranet applications it is just great. Look forward to the 3G stuff and potentially voice over IP..now that would be fun..
