Canada set to detail C$1 bln in Kyoto spending
Monday August 11, 3:12 pm ET
OTTAWA, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien plans to outline around C$1 billion ($725 million) in spending aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, an official said on Monday.
The announcement will account for about half the C$2 billion Ottawa pledged in February's budget for a five-year program to help meet Canada's commitment under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.
Chretien, whose government ratified the international accord in December, will provide details of the new spending on Tuesday afternoon, the official said.
Canada has committed to cutting emissions of gases blamed for global warming to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. In 2001, they were actually 18.5 percent above 1990 levels.
