Wednesday October 8, 9:01 am ET
CALGARY, CANADA--Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX: WIN - News), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, today announced that its LIBRA 3000 product series, which uses Wi-LAN's patented W-OFDM (Wide-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology to achieve high-capacity Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) network performance, was recently approved by the Ministry of Communication of the Russian Federation for deployment in Russia.
"I am very pleased to add Wi-LAN's LIBRA 3000 series to our product offering," said Peter Kochegarov, Technical Director of Comptek International, a distributor of high technology networking and telecom equipment with a distribution covering most of the Former Soviet Union. "The Russian broadband wireless access market needs a robust high-speed product in the licensed 3.5 GHz band, and preliminary trials have indicated that this product is likely to be very successful here."
"We have seen significant interest from Russian telecom operators in the LIBRA 3000 product series," said Inna Plotnikova, President of DIAMOND Communications, a network technologies system integrator and product distributor in the Russian telecommunications market. "LIBRA's non-line-of-sight capability and high capacity increases fixed wireless access subscriber coverage and this, along with PDA support and the lightweight single unit design, makes installation easier, reducing the operator's deployment costs and providing an improved return on a smaller required investment."
LIBRA 3000 is the 3.5 GHz version of Wi-LAN's third generation series of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) products. Wi-LAN believes LIBRA is the only product series in commercial use today that uses the same W-OFDM technology, known as 256-FFT OFDM, that has been approved as the mainstream physical layer in the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN (a) Standard and in the current draft of ETSI HiperMAN (a). This wireless Metropolitan Area Network (wireless MAN) W-OFDM delivers robust outdoor NLOS performance that Wi-LAN has proven in various commercial networks in over 30 countries worldwide. LIBRA 3000 delivers powerful and spectrally efficient performance of up to 32 megabits per second (Mbps) data rate in narrow 14 MHz channels with a range of up to 66 kilometres (41 miles) in a point to-point line-of-sight configuration, or an aggregated data rate of up to 192 Mbps per six-sector cell and a radius of up to 35 kilometres (22 miles) in a point-to-multipoint line-of-sight configuration. LIBRA 3000 also features multi-layered security and has tiered service management and user-friendly network management, all in a new lightweight, easy to install, weatherproof, single unit design.
"LIBRA 3000 is our first commercial W-OFDM product available for sale in Russia," said Patrick Bodnar, Regional Director, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Wi-LAN Inc. "The inherent advantages of its W-OFDM technology, combined with its availability in the licensed 3.5 GHz band, make it a very good fit for Russian telecom operators and internet service providers. I expect tour Russian distributors, Comptek International and DIAMOND Communications, will experience strong demand for this product series"
"LIBRA 3000 is a perfect complement to our other Russian-certified product, the Ultima3," said Nico Roelofsen, vice president global sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "LIBRA 3000 uses W-OFDM to achieve the high capacity and spectral efficiency that licensed telecom service providers need, and Ultima3, is ideal for customers that wish to deploy less dense networks in the 5.8 GHz license-exempt frequencies."

Notes: (1) The W-OFDM Advantage
Wi-LAN's patented Wide-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) technology is a variation of OFDM that further improves its characteristics. The signal reception is corrected for distortions, allowing greater transmission speeds, and the signal is processed to maximize the range and multipath resistance. W-OFDM allows spectrally efficient, non-line-of-sight, point-to-multipoint wireless networks to be implemented while minimizing interference with adjacent networks.
(2) The MC-DSSS Advantage
Wi-LAN's patented Multi-Code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology (MC-DSSS) makes it possible to multiply the carrying capacity of traditional spread spectrum systems by as much as ten times.
(3) The VINE Advantage
Wi-LAN's patent-pending Versatile Intelligent Network Environment (VINE) technology permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density, broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using an anypoint-to-multipoint topology. Established network nodes can be used as repeaters for other nodes that do not have either Line-of-Sight (LOS) or direct connectivity to the base station node.
(4) An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is an organization that provides Internet access to its customers. Other services, such as voice communication and video broadcast, may be bundled with the Internet access service.
(5) NLOS (Non-Line-of-Sight or Non-LOS) capability allows fixed wireless access networks to be configured without the requirement that antennas at the customer premises locations be visible from the base station antenna. This capability increases fixed wireless access subscriber coverage, from conventional levels of 50% or less, to levels that can exceed 90%, making the wireless service provider's business model much more compelling, particularly in high-density urban areas.
(6) CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) is the equipment that resides at the customer premise location.
