you can file a total loss form and use your loss against your wins in your tax return. you dont need to sell shares to use them as write off. i think this is the dumbest idea ive heard since pot

Unless you are on the US exchange, I don't think there is anyway you can sell. I believe (at least through RBC) there is a form you can fill out to release your shares, with no compensation,
